Why Only 3% Succeed
If you’re
frustrated because you’re not getting the
results you want in your business or your life,
it could very well be because you’re focusing on
them too much. Of course, it IS
important to know what you want, but focusing
constantly on what you want is a different
story, and might be the problem.
I often say
you’ll start making money once you stop focusing
on making money.
You’ll start
selling better once you stop focusing on
selling.
You’ll start
recruiting more once you stop focusing on
recruiting.
The same can be
said for most people in almost every area of
their lives – the more you focus on the results,
the more you’ll push them away.
*Important
Note: If this doesn’t describe you – if you
always get what you focus on – that’s
great. But still read this whole article
because you’ll understand what most others are
going through, and you’ll be able to lead and
influence more people.
Now, I know that
on the surface this concept goes 100% against
the Law of Attraction, which says you’ll attract
what you focus on, so let me explain further…
Typical
goal-setting training says if you focus on what
you want, you’ll be motivated to get it, and
you’ll do the activities that lead to results.
That’s why a lot of people have goal posters
filled with tangible stuff that they want
to acquire.
However, your
life’s purpose is not acquisition.
While the accumulation of money, toys, cars,
titles, etc. can definitely be fun, it will
never be the source of true inspiration for you,
or anyone.
It’s the
intangible rewards that get us going
internally. Personal and professional growth,
going to sleep tonight a better person than when
you woke up this morning, helping others grow
and learn – those are the types of intangible
things your heart and unconscious mind truly
want to experience in life.
After all, your
unconscious mind can’t drive a new car! ;-)
For a select few
people, though, focusing on tangible results
will elicit the intangible inspiration. In
other words, looking at the cars, houses and
money will trigger the internal feelings of
accomplishment and desire to act. However,
that’s only for a very small percentage.
If you’re like
most people, focusing on something
tangible that you don’t have right now only
reminds you of the fact that you don’t have it!
And that tends to create what I call a
‘cycle of lack’.
This ‘cycle of
lack’ generally causes you to start focusing on
other things that you don’t have, and other
goals you never achieved, which leads to
negative emotions, as you think about all the
times you fell short in the past.
And those
emotions lead to similar thoughts, which lead to
more negative emotions, etc – it can easily turn
into a vicious cycle ending in frustration,
overwhelm and ultimately de-motivation.
Does this sound familiar at all?
So in the long
run, constantly focusing on the results will
negatively energize the whole process for most
of us. I call us the “97 Percenters”
because only about 3 percent of the population
can focus on tangible results and get intangibly
inspired to act. That’s why only around 3% of
the people ever progress on to the next level of
success in any arena, following typical
goal-setting methods.
Us “97
Percenters” need something different. So,
here’s a simple 5 step process you can follow to
help get and keep you in motion:
Step 1 –
Clearly identify the results you want.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting tangible
stuff – money, cars, houses, etc – in fact, it’s
imperative that you have some clear measurable
goals. But that’s only the beginning of the
process.
Step 2 –
Create a personalized action plan designed to
get your results. And please don’t just
follow a cookie-cutter approach. Those don’t
work. It must have your name on it, with your
unique circumstances, likes, dislikes, time
restraints, etc. By the way, most people spend
more time planning their vacations than they do
their lives. :-o
Step 3 –
Experience the feelings of accomplishment.
Visualize already having achieved what you
want. Focus on your 5 senses – How does it
feel? What do you see? What do you smell?
What do you hear? How does it taste? This will
engage and enroll your unconscious mind to give
you the intangible inspiration.
Step 4 –
Release the Results! This is the step most
people don’t do. You don’t need to focus on the
tangible results any more because they’re
already built into the game plan in Step #2. So
if you continue to focus on the results, and
create de-motivation, it’s not going to
help you with the most important part of the
process…
Step 5 –
Follow your plan. Simple, I know. But
because most people freak themselves out by
focusing on the results and especially the date
by which these results are supposed to happen
(huge stressor), and they create the emotional
‘cycle of lack’, they don’t follow the action
plan.
Following your
action plan is THE ONLY THING that can lead to
the results you want. So the key is to focus on
whatever you possibly can to inspire you to
follow the plan. And for most, it’s not the
tangible results you’re seeking.
If you’re a 97
Percenter, I guarantee that you’ll get much
better results when you stop focusing on them so
much!
If you’re a 3
Percenter, implement this knowledge and help
your people find their own intangible source of
inspiration and watch your results EXPLODE!
Enjoy the
(intangible) journey!
