Finding Your Purpose Is Like
Going Shopping
By The Destiny Doctor®, Tony Magee, MS, MBA
It
takes a while for many people to find their
purpose in life. One gauge we can use to help
us is our talent. If you are multi-talented, it
will take maturity to weigh out your stronger
talents. Once this is accomplished, you should
stimulate those one or two strong talents and
determine where they fit in the bigger picture
for your life. Some rare folks — like Jennifer
“J-Lo” Lopez — manage to vacillate between many
talents. She’s an actor, singer, fashion
designer, and restaurateur. But this is not the
best course for most of us.
What application is best suited for your
talents? For example, a singer may have some of
the same skills as an actor or comedian. An
actor and a trial attorney may have similar
skills. A trial attorney may also be a
brilliant writer like John Grisham, best-
selling author of The Firm, The Pelican Brief
and The Rainmaker.
Unfortunately, many people spend their days
living in the vicinity of their purpose. But
what gets massive life results is when you
specifically define it. Finding one’s purpose
in life is just like what a woman goes through
when she’s out shopping for that special dress.
She’s looking for something special, but she
doesn’t know exactly what. She knows roughly
what size to buy, but she still has to try the
dress on to see if it fits. Then she has to
look at it to decide if the dress is the right
color, the right style, and whether or not it
fits the occasion. But guess what? When the
dress is right, it’s REALLY RIGHT!
This is similar to determining your life
purpose. No one can tell you exactly what your
purpose should be, but I can tell you this —
when it’s right, it’s REALLY RIGHT! Take time to
assess your stronger talents. Then exercise them
to see where they fit in the bigger picture.
Once you try them out in the world, you’ll see
your true purpose shining through and know it is
the right thing.
“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your
heart and try to love the questions themselves.
Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be
given you because you would not be able to live
them and the point is to live everything. Live
the questions now. Perhaps you will then
gradually, without noticing it, live along some
distant day into the answer.”
